Woods Starts At Top In 1st Pga Japan Tournament

Woods starts at top in 1st PGA Japan tournament

American star golfer Tiger Woods has shot nine birdies to share the top position on the opening round of the PGA Tour's first tournament in Japan.

More than 18,000 spectators gathered at a golf course in Inzai City, near Tokyo, on Thursday to see Woods and 77 other top golfers. Woods is playing in Japan for the first time in 13 years.

Woods made an unstable start, hitting his opening tee shot into a pond, and marking three straight bogeys.

But he then marked three consecutive birdies. He also got three straight birdies in the latter half.

Returning to the tour after a left knee surgery in August, Woods ended the day to tie with American Gary Woodland for the lead, with a six-under-par 64.

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama was third at five-under after hitting seven birdies and two bogeys.

The tournament will continue through Sunday.
