Three yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo, have performed a traditional ring-entering ceremony at a Tokyo shrine ahead of the New Year tournament.
About 2,000 people watched Kisenosato, Kakuryu and Hakuho at Meiji Shrine on Tuesday. The annual ceremony prays for the tournament's safety and success.
Kisenosato aims to put on a strong performance in the upcoming tournament. In the previous contest in November, he lost his first 4 bouts and pulled out due to a knee injury.
Kisenosato said he has been training hard, and that he hopes to do well in the upcoming tournament by focusing on each bout.
Kakuryu, who skipped the November tournament due to an ankle injury, said he wants to make a good start in the year's first tournament. He said he hopes to end the tournament with a smile.
The New Year tournament begins at Tokyo's Kokugikan arena on Sunday.
