In professional sumo, 2 yokozuna, or grand champions -- Hakuho and Kakuryu -- have pulled out of the year's 6th and final sumo competition.
The news came on Thursday, 3 days before the start of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.
Hakuho's stablemaster, Miyagino, said the wrestler is still recuperating from an operation on his right knee.
Hakuho also sat out the Nagoya tourney in July.
Kakuryu's stablemaster, Izutsu, said a doctor determined that the grand champion needs about 2 weeks' rest and treatment for damage to a right ankle joint.
This will be the 11th time for Kakuryu to sit out a 15-day tourney. He pulled out in the middle of the Nagoya tournament in July.
The pullout of the 2 Mongolians leaves Kisenosato as the only grand champion left in the tournament.
