Athletics: Watanabe Wins Hokkaido Marathon

Athletics: Watanabe wins Hokkaido MarathonYuko Watanabe, who had been overlooked for Japan's team to this year's world athletics championships, won the women's event in Sunday's Hokkaido Marathon.

Watanabe, who was third in this year's Osaka International Marathon, won with a time of 2 hours, 29 minutes, 13 seconds. Her result in Osaka last January had made her a candidate for the world championship but the Japan Association of Athletics Federations opted to send just three women to Moscow instead of the five they could have selected.

The men's event was won by Koji Gokaya in 2:14:26.
