Baseball: Kuroda Loses Shutout In 9th Vs Giants

Baseball: Kuroda loses shutout in 9th vs GiantsHiroki Kuroda was two outs away from his first shutout since returning to Japanese baseball but allowed the Yomiuri Giants to walk off with a dramatic 2-1 win over the Hiroshima Carp on Tuesday.
Kuroda (6-3), who struck out nine, had allowed just three hits going into the ninth with the Carp up 1-0 thanks to Yoshihiro Maru's home run the inning before.

But Kuroda gave up singles to Hisayoshi Chono and Hayato Sakamoto, putting runners on first and third with one out before cleanup man Shinnosuke Abe hit a line drive to right to tie the game.

With runners still on the corners, Yoshiyuki Kamei's sac fly deep to left scored Sakamoto, handing the Giants the win. Kuroda, who threw 118 pitches, left Tokyo Dome without speaking to reporters.

"I was amazed by Kuroda's location, but thought if I didn't hit one there I'd take a lot of flak," said Abe, who struck out looking twice and walked once in his previous at-bats.

Kuroda, facing the Giants for the first time in eight years, looked to have come out on top of a pitching duel against Giants starter Hayato Takagi, who finished with one-run ball on four hits and two walks in eight innings. Takagi fanned nine.

The 40-year-old former New York Yankee allowed a single in the first frame, but pitched perfectly from there on until the sixth.

Kuroda allowed a leadoff double in the seventh to Chono. A wild pitch and a walk put runners on first and third with two outs, but Kamei grounded out to second as Kuroda survived a scare.

Scott Mathieson (2-4), who struck out two during a perfect ninth, earned the win that saw the Giants return to the .500 mark.
