Japanese baseball legend Ichiro Suzuki of the Major Leagues' Seattle Mariners has announced his retirement.
The 45-year-old held a news conference after a game against the Oakland Athletics on Thursday in Tokyo.
Ichiro said he is ending his career as an active player.
On Thursday, Ichiro was part of the game's starting lineup.
On Wednesday, he played in an official game for the first time in 10 months at Tokyo Dome in the Japan Opening Series.
Last May, Ichiro assumed the post of special assistant to the Mariners' chairman.
Ichiro was hitless in pre-season games. Media outlets had been speculating about whether he will be benched on March 28 at the US opening game.
