NHK has learned that Japanese Major Leaguer Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners has told team officials he intends to retire.
The 45-year-old veteran is scheduled to hold a news conference after his team's match against the Oakland Athletics on Thursday in Tokyo.
Ichiro was part of the game's starting lineup.
On Wednesday, he played in an official game for the first time in 10 months at Tokyo Dome in the Japan Opening Series.
In May, Ichiro assumed the post of special assistant to the Mariners' chairman.
Ichiro was hitless in pre-season games. Media is focusing on whether he will be benched on March 28 at the US opening game.
