Figure Skating : Asada Does Well Enough To Lift Title In Beijing

Asada does well enough to lift title in BeijingMao Asada was a bit shakier in her free skate than she was the previous day in the short program. Still, she did well enough to win the women’s title Saturday at the Cup of China in Beijing.
Asada, returning to major competition after taking a year-long hiatus, combined with teenaged compatriot Rika Hongo to give Japan a 1-2 finish in the third event of the ISU Grand Prix series.

Asada compiled a total of 197.48 points to edge Hongo, who was second with 195.76. Russian Elena Radionova, who was sixth after the short program, finished third at 184.28, edging compatriot Anna Pogorilaya by .12.

Asada had topped the short program on Friday and taken nearly a six-point lead over Hongo into the free skate.

But the 2014 world champion had two points deducted during her free program and finished with the third-highest score. Hongo, winner of the 2014 Rostelcom Cup in Moscow, had the top score in the free program.

It was the 15th Grand Prix title of Asada’s career.
