The International Olympic Committee will soon start final talks on a plan to move the marathon and race walking events of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to the northern city of Sapporo.
Top officials from the IOC, Japan's central and Tokyo governments, and the Games' organizing committee will start their meeting at noon on Friday, the third and final day of talks on the issue.
The IOC plans to move the events to Sapporo as a measure against extreme heat during the Tokyo Games.
But the Tokyo governor opposes the plan.
A contract signed by the IOC, the Tokyo government and others stipulates that the IOC will make the final decision on problems that cannot be solved otherwise.
Prior to the four-party talks, a working-group meeting is set to discuss related issues including which party will shoulder the cost if the events were to be moved to Sapporo.
