The government is considering downscaling the New National Stadium Japan it will build as the main venue for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and Paralympics in a bid to reduce the massive construction expenses, a Cabinet minister in charge said.
"The project will require a huge amount of money. We'll consider downscaling the plan," Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister Hakubun Shimomura told a House of Councillors Budget Committee session on Oct. 23.
"We'll respect the original design. But we'll consider reducing the size of the surrounding space of the structure while ensuring the stadium meets International Olympics Committee standards," the minister said.
