Grass Valley, USA martial arts school shines at karate championshipsTen students from Grass Valley Kenpo Family Karate, a local martial arts school that celebrated its five year anniversary this month, participated in Brandon Hubbard’s Karate Championships in Folsom over the weekend.


The karate championship event is a regional competition and Grass Valley Kenpo Family Karate students, ranging in age from 6-12 years old, participated in traditional forms and free sparring divisions.

Among those who represented Grass Valley Kenpo Family Karate in the competition were Jolie Allen (first place in sparring), Owen Garner (first place in sparring and third place in forms), Marley Lopin (third place in sparring and third place in forms), Samantha Prosser (third in forms), TJ Vaughan (third place in forms), Teagan Walsh (third place in sparring and second place in forms). Other students representing Grass Valley Kenpo Family Karate at the event were Walker Garner, James Prosser, Shane Soszka and Joshua Trace.

“We are very proud of everyone who represented Grass Valley Kenpo Family Karate in the tournament, they had tough competition. Schools from all over the north state were represented and our students did very well,” said owner and head instructor David Garcia. “We are not a tournament school and we don’t care about the trophies. We participate in tournaments because we want these kids to learn about sportsmanship and competition and because it develops confidence and builds character; all of these kids are an excellent example of that.”
