Harumafuji Takes Another Tumble Jan 2017

Harumafuji takes another tumble Jan 2017Yokozuna Harumafuji is on shaky ground to start off the new year.
The yokozuna had a strong tachiai on Tuesday, but was unable to gain an advantage on No. 2 maegashira Shohozan, who stood his ground and eventually sent the Mongolian to his second loss in as many days on the third day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan.

Shohozan put himself into position to make a push from the center of the ring and maintained his balance in the process to avoid an arm throw attempt from the yokozuna as he sent Haru- mafuji out of the ring and down to the floor among the paying customers.

The two other yokozuna both stayed unbeaten. Hakuho manhandled No. 1 maegashira Mitakeumi across and out of the ring after Kakuryu needed little time to force out winless No. 1 maegashira Takarafuji.

Ozeki Kisenosato had a trouble-free time ushering out No. 2 maegashira Arawashi in their first career meeting. The ozeki backed the maegashira up at the start-off and eased the winless maegashira over the bales quickly to remain unbeaten.

Ozeki Kotoshogiku, in danger this tournament of losing his rank, backed the bigger Tochinoshin up against the bales, but the winless komusubi briefly fought his way back to flat ground. Kotoshogiku used another thrust to get him near the edge again, then deftly stepped aside as Tochinoshin’s attempted push resulted in the komusubi falling to the surface.

Ozeki Terunofuji picked up his first victory by defeating No. 3 maegashira Okinoumi, who stumbled out of the ring just after the tachiai.

Takayasu sent ozeki Goeido to his second loss of the tournament. The komusubi absorbed Goeido’s strong push at the tachiai and calmly waited to get a grip on his opponent’s belt before sending the ozeki crashing to the surface of the dohyo.
