The Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament opened on Sunday in the city of Fukuoka, southwestern Japan.
One of the wrestlers drawing much attention is Takakeisho, who has just returned to the second-highest rank of Ozeki. He started the tournament with a win.
Sumo fans are also cheering for rank-and-file wrestler Enho, one of the shortest and lightest in the top Makuuchi division.
Sekiwake Mitakeumi, who won the most recent tournament in September, also won his opening-day bout.
Yokozuna Grand Champion Hakuho got off to a good start. The other yokozuna, Kakuryu, dropped out of the tournament at the last minute due to a lower-back injury.
