Fifth favorite Let’s Go Donki defied tradition by making an early move, then easily holding on to win the Oka Sho by four lengths on Sunday for its first victory in a graded race among the JRA Classic series.
It was the second Oka Sho victory for jockey Yasunari Iwata, and the first G1 title for trainer Tomoyuki Umeda.
Seventh favorite Culminar finished second and eighth favorite Contessa Thule was third, leading to a hefty trifecta payout of ¥233,390. Heavily favored Rouge Buck, which went off at 1.6 odds, faded to ninth place.
“We went at our own pace,” Iwata said with a smile.
