Japanese marathon runner Mizuki Noguchi, who won a gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics, is expected to announce her retirement from competition.
Noguchi was the second Japanese female marathon runner to become an Olympic champion, following Naoko Takahashi, who won gold in the 2000 Sydney Games.
Noguchi set a Japanese record of 2 hours, 19 minutes and 12 seconds in the Berlin Marathon in 2005. The record still stands.
She missed the 2008 Beijing Olympics after injuring her left foot. Noguchi has since been plagued by other injuries.
She ran in the Nagoya Women's Marathon last month to win a ticket to this year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but finished in 23rd place.
