The New York Mets' Daisuke Matsuzaka, who has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow, should be able to throw within the week, Mets manager Terry Collins said on Monday.
"We're hoping in three of four more days he is going to start playing catch," Collins said.
Matsuzaka, who isn't eligible to be activated from the DL until Aug. 9, pitched two innings in relief in last Thursday's opener against the Milwaukee Brewers before complaining of discomfort in the elbow. The Mets have called up former Hanshin Tigers right-hander Buddy Carlyle from Triple-A Las Vegas in his place.
This season, Matsuzaka has a 3-3 record with one save and a 3.87 ERA in 28 appearances, including nine starts.
