By successfully defending his title at the Barcelona Open, Kei Nishikori raised his total of ATP crowns to nine, passing Kimiko Date-Krumm for most ever on pro tennis’ top circuits.
Date-Krumm won eight titles on the WTA tour before retiring in 1996. She returned to the court in 2008 and continues to compete at age 44.
Nishikori, who defeated Spain’s Pablo Andujar in the final Sunday, remained at No. 5 in the ATP rankings. He reached No. 4 earlier this year, tying Date-Krumm for highest-ever by a Japanese.
Nishikori won his first ATP title in Delray Beach, Fla., in 2008. In February, he won his third consecutive title in Memphis, Tenn.
