The Japan Olympic Committee is moving toward signing on swimmer Kosuke Hagino and sprinter Yoshihide Kiryu and several others as new Symbol Athletes for use in marketing efforts by top 2020 Olympic sponsors, multiple sources said Monday.
Also on the target list for the JOC are swimmer Daiya Seto, and gymnast Kenzo Shirai. The JOC intends to extend its current contracts with world and Olympic champion gymnast Kohei Uchimura, wrestler Saori Yoshida and swimmer Ryosuke Irie.
The JOC selects Symbol Athletes based on performance, popularity and future potential. Their image rights will be available to top-class Gold Partner sponsors who purchase an additional package worth 600 million yen (roughly $4.99 million).
