A police officer has been fatally stabbed at a koban police box in northeastern Japan.
Police have identified the suspect as a 21-year-old university student.
They say Yuta Aizawa attacked the officer at the police box in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture early Wednesday morning.
The attacker was shot dead by another police officer at the site.
The officer says he fired 3 bullets at the man because the man approached him with a knife and what appeared to be a model gun.
The stabbed officer and the attacker were taken to a hospital and were later confirmed dead.
Aizawa reportedly came to the police box saying he had picked up cash.
Police say he was living about 800 meters away from the police box.
They are investigating the case as a possible murder.
