Prefectures across Japan began accepting applications from the public on Monday, to run in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic torch relay.
The four companies sponsoring the relay have already been accepting the applications.
To be eligible, people must be born on or before April 1, 2008. They can apply up to five times, once at their local government office and to each of the four sponsors. They will only be able to run once if they are successful.
The deadline is August 31. Successful applicants will be notified from December.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government created a special website to apply. Of the roughly 1,300 people who will run in the Tokyo leg, 165 will be chosen from the public.
The torch relay will start in Fukushima Prefecture on March 26 next year and end on July 24, at the opening ceremony. About 10,000 runners will take part in the nation-wide relay.
