Ryu Captures Axa Ladies In ‘fun’ Playoff

Ryu captures AXA Ladies in ‘fun’ playoffThe playoff wasn’t as bad as Ritsuko Ryu thought it would be. In fact, she kind of enjoyed it.
Of course, it helped that Ryu defeated South Korea’s Lee Bo Mee on the third hole of a playoff to win the AXA Ladies Golf Tournament on Sunday for her first Japan tour title in three years.

“I was thinking, I don’t want to have [a playoff],” Ryu said. “But after doing it, it was fun.”

Ryu and Lee, who were among a quartet sharing the lead heading into the final round at the UMK Country Club, both shot 3-under 69 to tie for the top spot at 7-under 209.

Playing the par-5 18th hole for the playoff, both made consecutive birdie putts before Lee blinked first on the third extra hole. Ryu then sank a birdie putt to earn ¥14.4 million for her third career title.

Lee, an eight-time winner on the tour, had been victorious in four straight previous playoffs.
