Soccer : Struggling Gamba Held To Draw At Home

Soccer : Struggling Gamba held to draw at homeGamba Osaka played to a 1-1 draw in Asia Champions League action against Australia’s Melbourne Victory on Wednesday, and is 0-0-2 in Group G.
In Group H play, Urawa Reds fell 1-0 to the Pohang Steelers of South Korea.

“Our goal was to come away from the game with three points, so it’s too bad we weren’t able to do that,” Gamba midfielder Yasuhito Endo said in a postgame press conference. He seemed more upset by the fact Gamba drew in a home game than celebratory about scoring a goal.

The team hasn’t been able to win now in four regular-season J.League games and wasn’t able to get over the hump in this matchup, either.

At the club’s home ground this season — Suita City Football Stadium — the players seem to be struggling to adjust to the conditions of their new field.

One example was a backpass that goalkeeper Masaaki Higashiguchi was about to kick but he lost his footing and Gamba were unable to clear the ball. The mistake led to a corner kick for Osaka’s opponent that ultimately resulted in the game’s opening goal.

In another instance, midfielder Shu Kurata was able to start his dribble, but the ball came to a stop on him.

In ACL play, away games against teams from abroad take place in an environment that differs from Japan and are tough to win in, and it’s important to take care of home-field advantage by winning.
