US President Donald Trump presented "The United States President's Cup" trophy to the winner of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo on Sunday.
Trump, the first state guest of the new Reiwa era, had earlier played golf with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and professional golfer Isao Aoki at a course in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.
After returning to Tokyo by helicopter, they went with their wives to the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.
It was the first time a US President has attended a sumo tournament.
People holding smartphones stood up when they entered the arena. Trump waved as the crowd applauded.
Trump and Abe watched the last five bouts in a special box seat. The chairman of the Japan Sumo Association, Hakkaku, gave an explanation. Abe pointed to the ring and made some remarks to Trump.
Trump later entered the ring wearing slippers. He presented the President's Cup, which is 137 centimeters tall and weighs 30 kilograms, to the tournament winner, Asanoyama.
The leaders and their wives are to have dinner at an izakaya restaurant in Tokyo's Roppongi district.
Abe and Trump will hold their 11th summit on Monday.
