Tokyo prosecutors have served lawmaker Akimoto Tsukasa a fresh arrest warrant over new allegations of witness tampering in connection with a government-backed casino resort project.

The Lower House member is awaiting trial on a charge of accepting bribes from a Chinese company that aimed to take part in the project. At the time, Akimoto was a state minister in charge of Japan's integrated resorts, which include casinos.

Public prosecutors in Tokyo have arrested a lawmaker on suspicion of seeking false testimony in a court trial. Lower House member Akimoto Tsukasa has already been indicted in a bribery case related to a government-led casino resort project.

The prosecutors arrested Akimoto on Thursday.

A Japanese lawmaker who was arrested on suspicion of taking bribes from a Chinese company has also admitted to receiving thousands of dollars' worth of luxury brand goods.

Lower House member Tsukasa Akimoto was arrested last month on suspicion of receiving about 27,000 dollars from a Chinese firm called 500.com in 2017.
