A leadership race is underway among Japan's opposition ranks. Two of the largest opposition parties are set to merge next week, when a lawmaker from one of the two groups is named its head.
Nearly 150 members of the Diet have registered to join the new political party, including more than 100 in the Lower House. This means it will have nearly as many Lower House seats as its precursor, the Democratic Party of Japan, just before the party took power 11 years ago.
Economic analysts are expecting Japan to post growth for its gross domestic product in the July-September period despite a historic downturn in the previous quarter.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it has confirmed 60 new cases of coronavirus in the capital on Sunday. The figure is the largest since the state of emergency was lifted on May 25 in the capital.
Tokyo authorities say the infected people are in their teens to their 70s, with some ranging as high as 90 years and older. They add that people in their 20s and 30s account for three out of four of the newly confirmed cases.
