Sony has for long been the hardware king in Japan’s console market with the PlayStation 4 but it appears that Nintendo has taken that crown back. According to a new report, the lifetime sales of the Nintendo Switch have now surpassed the PlayStation 4 in the company’s home country. The Switch has sold more units than the PlayStation 4 in Japan.

The latest sales charts from Famitsu show that the Nintendo Switch has sold 8,125,637 units in Japan compared to the 8,077,756 units for the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 4 Pro combined. That’s certainly an impressive feat.

Nintendo’s future felt a bit murky during the era of the Wii U, where Nintendo was attempting to build on the success of the Wii with an updated model with newer features. Unfortunately, it never quite took and it felt like Nintendo might just drop out of the console race entirely. However, the company managed to successfully rally with the Nintendo Switch.

Not only has the Switch sold pretty well, but it has also managed to surpass the Wii U’s lifetime sales and there are no signs that it is slowing down. This is because according to Nintendo’s latest financials, it has been revealed that the Switch has also managed to surpass another Nintendo console, this time in the form of the N64.

As far as the best-selling Nintendo console of all time is concerned, that honor goes to the Nintendo DS which is sitting at over 154 million units. The N64 on the other hand has sold around 32 million units in its lifetime despite it being far down the list, but it seems that the Nintendo Switch is steadily making its way to the top.

According to Nintendo’s recent earnings (via Engadget), it has been revealed that the company had sold 9.41 million Switch consoles the last quarter, which means that it is now about 660,000 units behind the N64 which means that it won’t take long for the Switch to surpass the N64 in lifetime sales.

Based on the rate that Nintendo has been selling the Switch, it has been suggested that the Switch could easily surpass the Wii U's lifetime sales within a year and it seems that for some parts of the world, it is true. According to numbers from Famitsu, it looks like the Switch has managed to surpass the Wii U's lifetime sales in Japan already.

For those wondering what the Wii U's lifetime sales in Japan are, it is said to be at a little over 3.3 million units. Assuming the numbers are accurate, the Switch in Japan has managed to sell 3.4 million units to date, and in less than a year since the console was released (it was released on the 3rd of March, 2017).

Combine this with the 2.74 million units that they have sold since its release until now, it makes it shy of 13 million units which according to Engadget, puts it almost on par with Wii U which back in 2015, managed to hit 10 million units sold in its lifetime, and that's only after 3 years of it being in the market.
