
Of the “makuuchi” division wrestlers who competed in the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in May, two incorporated the kanji character for “umi” (sea or ocean) in their “shikona” ring names, four included the kanji for “yama” (mountain), and three used “fuji,” the name of Japan’s iconic and tallest mountain. Historically, “yama” is said to have always topped the list of kanji characters used in wrestlers’ names.
