Nearly 3,000 cases reported Saturday in Japan

Japanese authorities reported 2,991 new coronavirus cases as of 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Thirty-eight people died, including 10 in Hokkaido, nine in Osaka, five in Tokyo, two each in Chiba, Iwate and Kanagawa, and one each in Nara, Miyazaki, Gifu, Ehime, Aichi, Tochigi, Gunma and Shizuoka.

Toyota expanded a worldwide fuel pump recall to a total of 5.84 million vehicles for a defect that could cause the part to fail. In the United States, the total number of vehicles involved in this safety recall is now approximately 3.34 million vehicles.

On January 13, 2020, Toyota announced a safety recall for 695,541 Lexus and Toyota models. In March of 2020, the Japanese automaker added an additional 1.1 million vehicles to the previous recall.

A survey by Japan's cultural affairs agency shows nearly half of respondents think it's necessary to use simple Japanese language for information on disasters and public services, as the country has an increasing number of foreign residents.

The agency conducts an annual survey on changes to the way the Japanese language is used. It focused for the first time this year on a national effort to use "Easy Japanese" to assist non-native speakers in times of disaster. Easy Japanese includes the use of short sentences, simple words and fewer kanji characters.

TOKYO — Toyota plans to slash production in North America by nearly a third through October due to the coronavirus crisis and expects it will take some time for output to return to normal, a person familiar with the matter said.

Toyota will build about 800,000 vehicles, including its RAV4 SUV crossovers and Camry sedans, at plants in the United States, Canada and Mexico from April through to the end of October, the person told Reuters.

An NHK survey has found that nearly 10 percent of people infected with the coronavirus in Japan are believed to have contracted the pathogen inside hospitals and other medical institutions.

As of Tuesday, the total of confirmed and suspected cases of hospital infections stood at 1,086, across 60 medical institutions nationwide.

That marks the fourth straight day the daily count has hit a new record high. There were 189 new cases on Friday, 178 on Thursday and 144 on Wednesday.
