Infiniti plans to add a new flagship nameplate above the Q70 sedan (formerly known as the M series) and new crossovers in order to boost sales and build the brand. The plans were revealed by Infiniti CEO Johan de Nysschen during the line off ceremony for the new Q50 sedan at the Tochigi assembly plant in Japan, according to an Autonews report.
This makes all the sense in the world given Akio Toyoda’s ambition to make Lexus a genuine global rival to the German lux-meisters. Whisper is the new Lexus will be positioned to compete with the Mercedes SLK, BMW Z4, and entry-level Porsche Boxster.
According to Brian Smith, Lexus vice-president of marketing, the automaker could convert one of its body-on-frame SUVs, the GX or LX, to unibody platforms. In an interview , Smith stated that a three-row, unibody crossover is something the market could be seeing from Lexus in the future. It’s also what the automaker believes the consumers want to see.
Q: First off, how are you ramping up for the 2014 IS launch this summer?
A: We have a prelaunch in the middle of April called “The Amazing Mix”. It’s a music and visual experience with a little stage, where the IS is front and center. Every letter on your keyboard activates either sound or motion on the car or props around it. The system will record your keystroke movements so basically you can make your own 30-second video.
