Japanese officials confirmed more than 2,300 cases of coronavirus infection across the country on Thursday, a new daily record.

The daily count first crossed the 2,000 threshold on Wednesday. The rising numbers have come with record tallies in several prefectures.

The daily count first crossed the 2,000 threshold on Wednesday. But numbers have now climbed higher -- even before all of the prefectural tallies are logged.

Officials in Japan reported a record 1,685 new coronavirus cases in the country on Friday. That's the highest daily tally so far, topping the previous record confirmed on Thursday.

Nine people in six prefectures died of the disease, including four deaths in Saitama.

Officials in Japan confirmed 1,634 new cases of coronavirus nationwide on Thursday. That's the highest daily tally so far in the country, surpassing the previous record of 1,605 confirmed on August 7.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says 393 new cases were confirmed in the capital on Thursday.

The Japan Coast Guard said that as of 9:00 a.m. on Monday, four Chinese vessels were sailing in waters off Kubashima, one of the Senkakus. The area is in the contiguous zone just outside of Japan's territorial waters.
