Japan eyes $3.7 bil. for rain-hit regions

Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo says the government will compile a financial package of more than 3.7 billion dollars to help regions in the southwest and elsewhere left battered by record rainfall.

Abe revealed the plan to reporters as he visited the disaster-stricken city of Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, on Monday.

Japan to expand entry ban to more European regions

NHK has learned that the Japanese government is planning to expand entry restrictions to foreigners from parts of Europe where the new coronavirus infection is rapidly spreading.

The new restrictions will apply to three areas in Spain, including the Madrid region; four areas in Italy, including the northern region of Liguria; the Ticino region of southern Switzerland; and all of Iceland.

More countries, regions restrict entry from Japan

A growing number of countries and regions have banned the entry of travelers from Japan or imposed some restrictions as the new coronavirus continues to spread.

Japan's foreign ministry says that as of Wednesday, Micronesia, Samoa, Kiribati, Tuvalu, the Solomon Islands, and Comoros had restricted the entry of travelers from all countries and territories affected by the virus.

Weather officials say a low pressure system and a cold air mass are bringing snow to some parts of Tokyo and the surrounding areas. They are warning that traffic could be disrupted and roads could become icy.

Twenty-three centimeters of snow had fallen in Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, as of 2 a.m. on Tuesday. Eighteen centimeters were recorded at the same time in Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture.
