Koike urges govt. to make Tokyo tourism requests

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko says the central government has agreed to ask seniors and people with underlying health issues to refrain from using its tourism campaign when traveling to and from the capital.

Koike on Tuesday met with Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide, and later spoke to reporters at the metropolitan government building.

Japan's Defense Minister Kono Taro says the country has asked the United States to conduct coronavirus tests on all of its military personnel who come to Japan.

Kono told reporters on Friday that the ministry requested two tests, one before such personnel leave the US and the other after they enter Japan, regardless of whether they have fevers or other suspected symptoms.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced six categories subject to business closure requests to help contain the coronavirus outbreak.

Governor Koike Yuriko said on Friday that the requests are issued to amusement facilities, universities and cram schools, sports and recreation facilities, theaters, event and exhibition venues and commercial facilities.

Japan's central government and the Tokyo metropolitan government are discussing which businesses should be asked to temporarily shut down following the state of emergency declaration over the coronavirus outbreak.

Prime Minister Abe Shinzo declared a state of emergency for Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Osaka, Hyogo and Fukuoka prefectures on Tuesday, based on a revised law enacted last month.
