Nearly 3,000 cases reported Saturday in Japan

Japanese authorities reported 2,991 new coronavirus cases as of 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Thirty-eight people died, including 10 in Hokkaido, nine in Osaka, five in Tokyo, two each in Chiba, Iwate and Kanagawa, and one each in Nara, Miyazaki, Gifu, Ehime, Aichi, Tochigi, Gunma and Shizuoka.

Okinawa to lift state of emergency on Saturday

The southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa is set to lift on Saturday a state of emergency put in place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Governor Tamaki Denny told reporters on Friday that newly confirmed cases have been on the decline since peaking in mid-August. He attributed the decline to efforts by the entire prefecture to prevent infections.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says 429 new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed as of 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The daily tally in the capital has topped 400 for the second day in a row. It also marked the 12th consecutive day with more than 200 infections.

Officials of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 290 cases of coronavirus infection on Saturday.

This is the third consecutive day for the capital to confirm more than 200 new cases. On Friday, Tokyo reported 293 infections, which was a record high.

Virus-related ordinance to be enforced Saturday

Japan's government is fast-tracking the enactment of an ordinance that designates pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus as an infectious disease. It will go into force on Saturday.

The government approved the legislation this week for enactment on February 7.
