NHK has learned that Tokyo officials estimate the number of coronavirus tests needed per day will be 7.5 times current capacity if the flu spreads in the capital.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government made the estimate at the request of the central government.

The Japanese government is pushing ahead with plans to get the economy back on track even as the outbreak continues to spread.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga Yoshihide said, "I think it's necessary to strike a balance of social and economic activities while taking effective measures to prevent infection."

Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi canceled a news conference and worked from home on Saturday as an official of the Cabinet Secretariat was found to have contracted the new coronavirus.

The government said on Friday that the man in his 40's is a member of the taskforce launched last month to deal with the pandemic.

Taking a closer look at the number of new infections. Tokyo has logged a record number of cases for the fourth day in a row. Suspected in-hospital infections are occurring in other prefectures.

In the capital, a record 197 coronavirus cases of infection were confirmed on Saturday alone, bringing the total to over 1,900.

Seven new cases of the coronavirus have been reported in Japan on Tuesday, bringing the total to 987. That includes more than 700 from a quarantined cruise ship docked near Tokyo.

Cases are surging in Hokkaido. The governor of the northern prefecture declared a state of emergency last week.
