Japan's government has been closely monitoring exports of its advanced technologies and expertise since April. That's when the Trade and Industry Ministry set up a special section.
The government doesn't want the country's expertise in fields such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology used in military applications after it's been exported.
At E3 2019, Bethesda has revealed their plans to dip their toes into the game streaming market, although not necessarily in the way you might think. The company has announced Orion, which they are calling game streaming technology that is supposed to improve on the overall game streaming experience.
According to Bethesda, “Orion was designed to improve the player experience by mitigating latency and reducing bandwidth requirements. Orion was also created for publishers, streaming providers, and developers to lower their streaming costs and ensure that games perform at the high quality they intended. Orion makes it possible for streamed video games to reach more players in more places without compromising quality.”
The 2020 Lexus RX350 and 450h made their debuts late last night, refreshing the fourth-gen model that made its debut back in 2015. The luxury crossover gets a number of updates, with the changes mostly focused on styling, tech and safety. The new three-row model carries over, too, with the second row sporting a set of captain's chairs rather than a full bench. The 2020 RX is set to go on sale in the U.S. in late August 2019.
The updated model doesn't look all that different than the 2019 model, especially from the profile. That said, the front and rear fascias have both been smoothed out, taking cues from the handsome LC coupe and LS sedan. All the lines look a bit more sleek, with thinner headlights and L-shaped blades in the taillights, again similar to the LC and LS. There's a sharp crease toward the bottom of the RX that carries across the grille, rocker panel and rear bumper. The grille itself gets a new mesh pattern. The interior is mostly unchanged, with changes mostly focused on comfort rather than design. Three-row models now have more adjustment in the back row, and the second row gets the aforementioned captain's chairs.
Toyota has confirmed this week that it’s halting plans to deploy the Dedicated Short-Range Communications technology on its vehicles in the United States. It was previously planned to go ahead with this deployment by 2021. This technology would enable cars and trucks to communicate with each other in order to avoid accidents.
There have been divisions among auto manufacturers over whether the DSRC system is to be used or a 4G/5G-based system in the United States. Toyota’s decision to halt the deployment of DSRC on its vehicles may deal a blow to those who advocate for this system. Toyota had first announced plans in April last year to start installing DSRC technology in its vehicles by 2021.
Nissan has announced that its Decherd, Tennessee, assembly plant will start using a fascinating cylinder-coating technology in the Altima's 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, a technology that the company points out has been used in the high-performance GT-R. This isn't the first application of what Nissan calls its "mirror-bore" technology; it has used the coating process in a number of vehicles. But it's worth taking a minute to examine the interesting advantages being implemented in the Altima's PR25DD engine.
Most engines that feature an aluminum block use a pressed-in iron cylinder liner for durability. Aluminum simply isn't very tough, and a piston (and its steel rings) moving around in an uncoated aluminum cylinder bore would destroy it fairly quickly. Iron is much more durable, yet still much lighter than an entirely iron engine block.
Toyota said on Sunday it was setting up a research institute in Beijing in partnership with Tsinghua University to study car technology using hydrogen power and other green technologies that could ease environmental problems in China. The initiative, outlined by Toyota's President and Chief Executive Akio Toyoda in a speech at Tsinghua University, is part of the Japanese carmaker's efforts to share more technology with China as it seeks to expand its business in the country by beefing up manufacturing capacity and distribution channels, a source close to Toyota said. The Tsinghua-Toyota Joint Research Institute will conduct research into cars and new technology to solve environmental problems in China, including reducing traffic accidents, Toyota said in a statement. The institute will "cooperate in research not only related to cars for Chinese consumers, but also in research related to active utilization of hydrogen energy that can help solve China's energy problems," the company said. The move dovetails with Toyota's announcement this month that it would offer carmakers and suppliers around the world free access to nearly 24,000 patents for electric vehicle technologies. Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi told Reuters earlier this month that the automaker intended to become a tier 2 supplier of hybrid systems and that it had already received enquiries from more than 50 companies.
