The Tokyo Metropolitan government says it confirmed 250 new cases of the coronavirus in the capital on Thursday.

Officials say this is a preliminary figure as of 3 p.m.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Japan stood at 12,480 on Friday.

The tally includes people tested at airport quarantine stations, health ministry officials, quarantine officers and individuals who returned to Japan from China on government-chartered planes.

Health officials in Japan say more than 430 new cases and 29 deaths were reported on Thursday. The total number of confirmed cases is now over 12,000.

This does not include 712 cases linked to the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was quarantined near Tokyo in February.

Four people who are being held at a police station in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward were confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus on Saturday, in addition to two others who tested positive earlier this month. A fifth man who has since been released was also confirmed to be infected.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department says the five men are aged between their 20s and 60s.

Japan's cumulative total of confirmed infections with the coronavirus surpassed 10,000 on Saturday.

The figure now stands at 10,098, excluding cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo earlier this year.

Japanese health authorities say more than 80 people have been confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus on Sunday so far, bringing Japan's total to over 1,800.
