The most distinctive feature of the module is that its size is 1/10 that of the smallest existing product or smaller, the company said. The package of the module measures 15.0 x 7.0 x 4.5mm. Its volume is 0.47cc.
The small size was realized by using the "IR1011" fast-response, high-sensitivity infrared sensor device manufactured by Asahi Kasei Microdevices. The size of the IR1011 is as small as 2.7 x 1.9 x 0.4mm. By applying it to a gas sensor, it becomes possible to drastically reduce module size, the company said.
Also, because of the high sensitivity of the IR1011, the distance between the lamp and sensor of the gas concentration meter can be shortened, contributing to the small size. Furthermore, the power consumption of the module is 3mW (with a power supply voltage of 3.0V and a measurement cycle of eight seconds), which is much smaller than those of existing products.
Asahi Kasei Microdevices expects that the module will be used in portable CO2 monitors, for checking CO2 concentration for air conditioners and as CO2 sensors embedded in mobile devices.
The major specifications of the prototyped sensor module are as follows. Its operating power-supply voltage and operating temperature range are 2.7-5.5V and 0-50°C, respectively. Its measurement range is 300-5,000ppm, and its measurement cycle is 1-28 seconds. It has an I2C bus digital interface.
