JDI Shows Off 8K LCD Light Field Display

Japan Display Inc (JDI) exhibited a light field display at the Society for Information Display 2017 (SID 2017), an academic conference that took place from May 21 to 26, 2017, in Los Angeles, the US.

Light field displays realize 3D viewing by reproducing many lights going in various directions. They enable to see 3D images without special glasses. Also, unlike parallax barrier glasses-free 3D displays, their images change in accordance with the viewing angle like real objects.

The light field display exhibited by JDI uses an 8k LCD panel. Its back plane is low-temperature polycrystalline Si (LTPS) TFT, and its LCD mode is IPS. Its screen size, resolution and angle range for 3D viewing are 17 inches, 176ppi and 130°, respectively.

At SID 2017, Samsung Display also exhibited a light field display. It uses a 5.09-inch OLED panel. Its angle range for 3D viewing is 30°, and it supports 26 viewpoints. It is expected to be used for 3D picture books, gaming, head-mounted displays and automotive displays.
