Sony has for long been the hardware king in Japan’s console market with the PlayStation 4 but it appears that Nintendo has taken that crown back. According to a new report, the lifetime sales of the Nintendo Switch have now surpassed the PlayStation 4 in the company’s home country. The Switch has sold more units than the PlayStation 4 in Japan.
The latest sales charts from Famitsu show that the Nintendo Switch has sold 8,125,637 units in Japan compared to the 8,077,756 units for the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 4 Pro combined. That’s certainly an impressive feat.
Those who have been keeping an eye on these numbers down in Japan wouldn’t really be surprised by this. Given the incredible momentum that has been behind the Switch ever since it was launched, they knew that it was only a matter of time before the lifetime sales for this console overtook the PlayStation 4.
What’s interesting to note is just how quickly, in comparison, the Switch has been able to surpass the PlayStation 4. As many of you would remember, Sony released the PS4 back in February 2014. The Nintendo Switch didn’t come out until March 2017. So even though it arrived on the market three years later, the Nintendo Switch has managed to sell a lot more units than Sony’s console.
