Sharp unveils largest LCD 3D TV for Japanese marketSharp announced the "Aquos Quattron G" series of high-end LCD TVs featuring "Quattron" technology, which uses red, green, blue and yellow color filters.

Sharp announced six models whose sizes range from 80- (the largest LCD TV manufactured by a Japanese maker) to 40 inches. It will release 40-, 46-, 52- and 60-inch models June 10, 2012, and 70- and 80-inch models June 20, 2012, in Japan. There are no manufacturer's suggested retail prices, but the expected retail prices of the 80- and 40-inch models are 950,000 (approx US$11,662) and 160,000, respectively.

As the concepts of the G series, Sharp cited "large screen that creates realistic sensations" and "more accessible broadcasting and Internet."

As for the former, Sharp said that Japanese users watch TV from a distance of 2.4m on average and that the demand for 60-inch and larger TVs will increase because they can create realistic sensations from that distance. Also it said that, by adding a network function that notifies the user of the existence of TV programs and VOD services, the user can have new TV experiences.

The G series is equipped with an image processing technology that corrects the outline, brightness and color of each sub-pixel (a total of 8.29 Mpixels) by analyzing a scene of a video.

"Our existing products (such as the L series) equipped with LCD panels using the Quattron technology increase resolution by correcting the brightness of each sub-pixel," Sharp said. "In addition to that, for the G series, it became possible to reproduce textures and colors more accurately by correcting the expression of colors."

For example, the G series judges whether a yellow color should be reproduced by combining red and green or using yellow and makes corrections for each sub-pixel.

This time, Sharp employed a newly-developed image processor. The company used a dual-core structure for the CPU integrated with the processor to improve the speed and accuracy of the process that analyzes the brightness and frequency of each video frame and selects an appropriate correction mode.

In regard to the network-related function, the G series recommends TV programs and related information available on the Internet based on a TV program being watched or programs that the user watched in the past on the screen that appears when the "Home" button is pressed. This mechanism was developed for "meeting TV programs and information," Sharp said.

Specifically, it shows (1) the ranking of TV programs being watched by Aquos users, (2) ranking of VOD contents, (3) future programs extracted based on registered keywords (up to five) and the programs that the user watched or recorded in the past, (4) recently recorded programs, (5) Websites related to the program being watched, etc. The order of the information is changed based on how often the user used each information in the past.
