Smartwatch Visualizes How Much Time Parent Shares With Child

Smartwatch Visualizes How Much Time Parent Shares With ChildVeldt Inc developed a smartwatch that automatically measures the time during which family members share time with each other.
Veldt (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo) is a company that manufactures and sells wearable devices and IoT (Internet of Things)-related products. The smartwatch, "Tottori West Family Time Watch," will be used for a tour for experiencing migration to the western part of Tottori Prefecture.

The new smartwatch automatically measures "parent-child time" or the time during which the distance between a parent having a smartphone and a child equipped with a wristband-like beacon is less than about 30m. The smartwatch shows accumulated parent-child time on its screen.

If a target time for the week is set with the watch for each family, an alarm is activated hourly from 8:00am to 9:00pm, and an achievement rate and accumulated time are displayed as colors.

In addition to the function to measure parent-child time, the smartwatch can receive notifications related to e-mail, SNSes and incoming calls from a smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0. And it can also measure the amounts of activity, sleep, etc.

The smartwatch is expected to visualize parent-child time in a tour of a migration project under the theme of "family time" and encourage participants to actually move to the area.

According to the Bureau of the Council for the Promotion of the Western Region of Tottori Prefecture, when it conducted a questionnaire survey with families living in the Tokyo metropolitan area and families living in Tottori Prefecture, it found that, in Tottori Prefecture, a larger number of families feel that they have much time to spend with their children.

Therefore, to make the participants feel how much time they can actually spend with their children in the tour, the bureau asked Veldt to develop the smartwatch. The tour will be offered twice: from Feb 3 to 6, 2017, and from Feb 10 to 13, 2017. And nine families will participate in it.
