For years, Toyota dominated this segment of the market but with the arrival of the CR-V Hybrid, no longer has this market locked up.
On paper, the two compare very well with each other. Powering the 2020 CR-V Hybrid is a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with two electric motors and all-wheel drive. It delivers a total of 212 hp and has been rated by the EPA at 40 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 38 mpg combined.

All CR-V Hybrid models include Honda’s Sensing suite of safety and driver assistance technologies. The SUV is also equipped with LED headlights with automatic high beams, Smart Entry and Pushbutton start, as well as automatic climate control.
By comparison, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid features a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder with two electric motors and offers up 219 hp. As a result, the two are very evenly matched when it comes to performance. However, the Toyota does have a slight efficiency edge returning 41 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 40 mpg combined in the U.S.
