MediaTek Dimensity 8000 Processors for Android Phones Introduced @ MWC

MWC 2022 was the perfect place for MediaTek to launch its new Dimensity 8000 series of processors (official page), consisting (for now) of two models, the 8000 and 8100. They can be considered a replacement for last year’s Dimensity 1200 series.

These new chips will serve a premium 5G smartphone market that is more affordable than flagship (=most expensive) phones that MediaTek can power using its Dimensity 9000 series.

The overall goal is to bring “flagship features” to a slightly lower price point for 5G phones that cost approximately $400-$700.

From a technical point of view, the Dimensity 8000 is a 5nm octo-core (4x A78 and 4x A55 cores) system on a chip (SoC) that seems very capable for heavy computing and graphics tasks.

MediaTek expects the Dimensity 8000 to match the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888’s performance, and the company says its CPU power efficiency is even higher (performance per watt).

We’ll have to see how the independent benchmarks turn out, but that’s the bar that MediaTek has set, and it sounds exciting because it could lead to a drastic increase in the performance/value ratio.

MediaTek’s potential pricing might even put the more affordable Snapdragon 870 within striking range, but it isn’t easy to have any visibility since prices and deals are not public.

This new series supports camera “up to” 200MP, which typically means that simultaneous camera capture using a combination of 108MP and lower camera sensors will be possible. These capabilities are in high demand from Tiktokers and vloggers.

MediaTek is generally more known for being in phones under the $400 price point, so this offering for the $400-$700 segment could help the company gain even more market share, especially in Asian and European markets.

As of late, MediaTek’s share in the Android smartphone market has risen considerably, and the company claims it grabbed the #1 spot (in units). Since MediaTek is in high-volume devices such as some Samsung Galaxy A-series or Motorola G Pure, that wouldn’t be surprising.

The launch of the Dimensity 8000 series is timely as people (and OEMs, Carriers) are more attentive than ever to the value-proposition of everything they purchase. I’ve included the official MediaTek Dimensity 8000 teaser video below, and you can find a bit more technical details in the official brochure (PDF).
