Decision Expected On Overseas Spectators At Games
Five organizations preparing for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will meet on Saturday evening to resolve the question of whether overseas spectators can attend the Games.
The meeting will comprise members of the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, the Tokyo Games organizing committee, the Japanese government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
The participants last met on March 3, and agreed to decide on the issue by the end of this month.
The second meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., Japan time.
Attending in-person will be organizing committee chief Hashimoto Seiko and Japan's minister for the Games, Marukawa Tamayo. Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko, IOC President Thomas Bach and IPC President Andrew Parsons will attend online.
The meeting comes as public sentiment builds against the idea of accepting overseas spectators. This is due partly to the unpredictability of coronavirus variants and the infection situation at home and abroad.
The participants are also expected to discuss issues including ticket refunds.
