Dolls For Girls' Festival On Display In Shiga

Dolls for girls' festival on display in Shiga

Traditional Japanese "hina" dolls are on display in Shiga Prefecture, western Japan, ahead of the Girls' Festival on March 3.

The festival is called "Hina Matsuri." It is held to celebrate the health and happiness of young girls in Japan.

The dolls are showcased at about 100 homes in the central part of Hino Town. The former residences of merchants are among the houses. Visitors can look at the displays through small windows.

Some of the figures date back to the era between the early 17th and mid-19th centuries. That is called the Edo period. The dolls have been preserved by each household.

The coronavirus pandemic forced organizers to scale back this year's event.

But people enjoyed strolling through the old part of the town and looking at the colorful dolls.

The organizers said they decided to hold this year's event, despite the pandemic, because it revitalizes the local community. They called on visitors to take thorough anti-virus measures and enjoy themselves.

The event is set to last until March 7.
