Ex-Olympian: Treatment of Mori should be discussed

Former Japanese Olympic athlete Tamesue Dai has called for the Tokyo Games organizing committee to discuss how to deal with its president Mori Yoshiro over his remarks, which were criticized as sexist.

Tamesue, a three-time Olympic hurdler, wrote on his website that silence is regarded as approval, and that he deeply reflected on his failure to express his opinion.

He stressed that he opposes any gender-based discrimination, and urged the organizing committee to discuss an appropriate response to Mori's remarks at its executive board meeting.

Tamesue also wrote that Japan appears to be falling behind the rest of the world in terms of gender equality, and that people should take this opportunity to consider the issue seriously. He called for the creation of a society in which anyone can openly take part in discussions, and individuals have the courage to speak out and realize their ideals.

Tamesue added that such actions would embody the Tokyo Games' vision and become their true legacy.

Mori's remarks have triggered criticism in Japan and other countries. Many say the comments are against the Games' concept of unity in diversity. About 390 people have withdrawn from volunteering for the Games.
