The Goto Knit company in Yamagata Prefecture, in northern Japan, started online sales of the masks this month, and has sold 1,000 to customers in Tokyo and its vicinity.

Company officials say purchasers have told them they wear the masks on crowded trains or when they go to a hospital, in the hope of giving people around them a sense of security.

The company's president, Goto Tadashi, says people in Japan are still very anxious about the coronavirus, and he hopes the masks will help them to feel safe when they mingle with others.
