Immigration officials to investigate woman's death

Japanese Justice Minister Kamikawa Yoko says she has instructed an investigation into the recent death of a Sri Lankan woman while in custody at an immigration detention facility.

Kamikawa disclosed the information to reporters after a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The death occurred at the facility of the Nagoya Regional Immigration Services Bureau in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture on Saturday. The woman in her 30s was in a solitary room. Staff found her unresponsive and unconscious while making rounds, and she was taken to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

Kamikawa said the woman had been complaining of poor health and had been examined by doctors in and outside the facility.

The minister said she takes the case seriously and has instructed the Immigration Services Agency to swiftly investigate facts such as actions taken and developments leading to her death.
