Japan promises $200 mil. for global food crisis

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has pledged roughly 200 million dollars to offset the global food instability caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He is now in Germany for summit talks with other Group of Seven leaders.

The G7 leaders met Monday at a resort in Bavaria for day two of the three-day summit.

Food insecurity is among the main topics being discussed. The money that Kishida has pledged is designed to help Ukraine as well as Middle Eastern and African countries hit hard by soaring food prices.

The leaders also discussed their response to Russia's invasion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is joining via video link.

The G7 leaders released a statement outlining how they plan to increase pressure on Russia. They said they will ban imports of Russian gold as part of efforts to starve Moscow of revenue.

The leaders also said they will work to meet Ukraine's "urgent requirements for military and defense equipment."

The statement explicitly calls out Russia for hurting global food security. The G7 leaders say they are determined to support Ukraine with the production and export of agricultural products.
