Japan reports 12 more anaphylaxis cases

Japan's health ministry says 12 more people have experienced a severe allergic reaction after receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine.

The ministry said on Thursday that 12 male and female healthcare workers from their 20s to their 50s developed anaphylaxis.

Medical institutions reported that their symptoms included headaches, nausea and hives after being inoculated with the vaccine.

The reactions reportedly started to appear about 40 minutes or less after receiving the shot. Seven of them have allergies to medicine or food. They are all expected to recover.

A total of 180,741 healthcare workers had been vaccinated as of 5 p.m. on Thursday in Japan. Among them, 37 anaphylaxis cases have been reported. That's about one in 4,900.

The health ministry plans to examine the issue at a meeting of its expert panel on Friday.
